THE JOYFUL CO-CREATION OF LIBERATORY JUDAISM
ABOUT DLO
Davening Liberation Oraciones is embarked on the joyful co-creation of a liberatory Judaism beyond Zionism, rooted in justice-based Jewish ritual and the ancestral values of pikuach nefesh, the preciousness of every human life.
Our intention is to embody a deep commitment to the well-being of the land and the people in and amongst which we find ourselves as uninvited visitors, as settlers, as guests.
Our chavurah of gender-wonderful, multi-generational leaders and members are
envisioning and building a community both
grounded in sacred tradition and disruptive of all systems of oppression and colonization.
In that light, we centre the work of collective
liberation from Zionism and its motivating
ideologies of conquer, conquest and genocide.
We are proud members of Apartheid Free Communities of BC, and are committed to doing our part to dismantle settler colonialism white supremacy from Turtle Island to Palestine.
CELEBRATION ACROSS CULTURE,
DIFFERENCE, AND LANGUAGE.
Our community’s name - Davening Liberation Oraciones
- is a creative collaboration with the lineages of beloveds who make up who we are collectively. Our many Jewish languages are our delicious diasporic treats: Yiddish, Ladino, English, French and Spanish are all a part of who we are as a community.
Davening Liberation Oraciones means Praying Liberation Prayers, and our community celebrates relationships across multiple differences, cultures, contexts, and lineages – as we pray liberation prayers together.
We understand that building sacred space in community is a vulnerable act of manifesting justice across generations. We engage with our Jewish tradition joyfully, critically and with hearts both full and broken, finding guidance in Rabbi Tarfon’s teaching: “It is not our obligation to complete the work, but neither are we free to neglect it.” (Pirkei Avot, 12:17)
We embrace our radical, queer,
trailblazing ancestor Melanie
Kaye-Kantrowitz’s blessing:
Great Mystery,
may you
bless us in this place,
here, now.
On a stolen land
we don’t claim,
we build a new home,
forged and bound together,
in struggle and in
joy with our neighbours.
(Prayer for Diaspora, 2007)
Our Community
DLO community is co-creating collective
liberation through spirituality and culture as
a growing group of self-identified Jews and allies. We are: queer, non-binary, trans and genderful,
(dis)abled, mad folx, folx in recovery, caregivers,
Jews of Colour, Jews by choice, folx with mixed ancestry, folx of many traditions and cultures, including Indigenous, Muslim, Christian, and Buddhists, agnostics and atheists. We love and embrace our fabulous mixed multitudes, and believe that like the sacred beyond humyn world, we thrive in diversity.
We embrace and respect the relationships,
guidance and calling in of our Palestinian and Indigenous comrades and kin, and honour acts
of collective strategizing, grieving, finding joy
and refusing white and Jewish supremacy with
our ancestors and through our descendants.
